Fractured Fairy Tales Dylan and Katy (Spring 2010)

BIG BAD WOLF
The big wolf came to the pigs' house to play. But the wolf could not stop sneezing or coughing because he had a cold. So the wolf went to the first house and sneeze. The house flew away. The wolf tried to apologize. He then went to the second pig's house and his house flew away. He kept trying to explain that he had a cold. He stayed at the third pig's house and he explained that he had a cold. The pigs apologized for not listening to him and everyone was happy.

Class,

I want you to look at the additions that I have added to the blog. See our gorgeous flowers!

Why do you think the plants in our lava sand flower bed are so small compared to the other flower bed? (control)

Class,

Your question for this week is the following:

Now that we have discussed soil amendments like lava sand and mushroom compost, what other conditions are needed for optimal growth of our plants (marigolds and zinnias) in the two flowering beds?

Look on the web or in a garden book about what zinnas and marigolds need to for optimal growth.

research question - Monday april 13

Dear Class,

What other soil amendments can you add other than lava sand?

For example, I saw mushroom compost for sale at Calloways Nursery?

research

I cannot locate the comment I came across earlier about the argument that lava sand has no benefits as a soil amendment.
I have sent an e-mail to Howard Garrett requesting any information on studies pro and con; while we cannot rely on his response completely (because he is very much pro- lava sand, and may be biased), it could be a start to lead us to the research. If research exists, we should go straight to the actual studies to decide for ourselves whether the research is well enough done to be reliable, and to see for ourselves what the results were. Of course, when our experiment is done, we'll have our own results as well!
I'll let you know as soon as he responds. In the meantime, maybe one of you can do a better search than I did. I tried typing in lava sand, controversy, benefits.

Class,

As you know when we checked our two garden plots last Friday, we had one seedling pushing through the lava sand. There were no seedlings yet in the regular bed. We also planted some strawberry plants.

Unfortunately when I looked at the beds this afternoon, the strawberry plants looked rather withered because of the intense winds. Maybe one of you could water the plants. There were also a few seedlings coming up in our lava bed.

We will discuss this in more detail, on Thursday.
